ASU Camp Tontozona
Arizona State University’s newly reconstructed Camp Tontozona football training facility has been completed. The football camp is part of a nearly 60-year ASU tradition that started when coach Frank Kush first took the team up to Payson, Arizona in 1960. The camp’s unique name is a combination of “Tonto”, after the Tonto National Forest that flanks the camp, and “Zona” for Arizona. The camp serves as a season kickoff of sorts, to foster bonding and preparation for the months ahead. A sense of excitement vibrates around camp, as it signals the beginning of the new season.
General Acrylics constructed the new state-of-the-art field using an AstroTurf premium synthetic turf system. In the past the team had to relocate and even cancel practices due to flooding and inclement weather. The new AstroTurf system reduces the chances of flooding, and provides a more predictable playing surface to maintain routine practice schedules at the camp.
Camp is scheduled to commence August 3rd and concludes on the 10th. The 2019 season kick off takes place on August 29th when the Sun Devil’s host Kent State.
